Mr. Bruttell has had a 49-year career in construction. He began his career working as a carpenter and later as the general manager of the non-profit construction company, Brothers Construction, that renovated several hundred homes for low income families. Work for Brothers began as his alternative service as a Conscientious Objector to the Vietnam War. He is a Licensed Builder and recently ended a 48 year career in construction as owner and chairman of Bruttell Roofing, Inc.
Mr. Bruttell is an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy [UDM] in the Religious Studies Dept. where he teaches various courses in social ethics and history.
His interest in social ethics and the contribution of religion to society led to co-founding The Center for Religion and Community Values at UDM along with Dr. George Pickering. He also formed the Working Group on Religion and Community Formation at the Michigan Roundtable.
Community Affiliations: Vice-Chairman of the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit; Vice-Chairman of Ecumenical Theological Seminary; member of the Interfaith Scholars Colloquy; former member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion; member of Christ the King R.C. Parish where he serves as co-chair of the parish Commission on Inclusion.
Academic and scholarly interests: these include the history of religion in America, the intersection of science and religion, the ideas and structures of supremacy and segregation, social justice issues as well as America’s rocky attempt to make good on its declaration that all people are created equal. These interests have been the subject of a number of papers presented in scholarly forums including the American Academy of Religion and the Social Ethics Seminar.
Education: Awarded BSBA degree from Lawrence Technological University.
Awarded Master of Arts in Religious Studies by the University of Detroit Mercy
Professional affiliations: Construction Association of Michigan, the National Roofing Contractors Association, the Social Ethics Seminar and the American Academy of Religion.
Mr. Bruttell is married to Judy Bruttell. Together they have raised three children who are now wonderful adults. His four grandchildren are amazing! Personal interests include travel and bicycle touring.
